Near Borobudur, the ninth-century Buddhist temple in Central Java, hosts Nisa and Amelia take part in a ritual rooted in Kejawen, the island's ancient spiritual tradition in which water carries away what a person no longer needs. Guided through the ceremony known as mitoni urip, they enter a spring where flowers of different colors stand in for character, thought, senses, and body, then release those flowers into the river as a symbolic rebirth. A closing invocation gives thanks to the ancestors before the ritual ends, and both hosts describe the experience as more emotional and disorienting than they expected.
