Sauna Channel presents a cinematic exploration into the heart of Moroccan social life with "The Changing World of Moroccan Hammams." The film bridges the gap between the technical preservation of historic structures and the preservation of the Moroccan soul.
Architect Rachid Haloui, a heritage conservation expert, details the profound philosophy behind the hammam's design, from the waterproofing properties of traditional tilework to the complex vaults that circulate heat beneath the floors. He is joined by Professor Dr. Magda Sibly, whose deep knowledge of Mediterranean bathhouse history helped pivot the restoration of Hammam Seffarine toward a project of true cultural rehabilitation.
Providing a personal lens into this world, attendee Francis Matthew recounts the sensory experience of the hammam, describing it as a mysterious and beautiful pilgrimage of steam, silhouettes, and communal connection. However, the film also addresses the stark reality facing these landmarks as many functional hammams close their doors. Through these three voices, the documentary highlights the historical importance of the hammam and seeks to inspire a resurgence of this distinct practice to ensure it remains a living part of the community for generations to come.
