Vikings Actor Jasper Pääkkönen Debunks Common Sauna Myths
Ever wondered about the right way to sauna? Jasper Pääkkönen, the Finnish actor known for his roles as Halfdan the Black in Netflix's Vikings and in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, is here to set the record straight. As a native Finn and the owner of Löyly, the world-famous sauna named "One of the 100 Greatest Places in the World" by Time Magazine, Jasper is an undeniable authority on authentic sauna experiences.
For Jasper, sauna is far more than a health trend; it's a cherished cultural cornerstone. In this video, he addresses the most common myths and misconceptions, ensuring you can enjoy a proper sauna experience no matter where you are.
Here's a sneak peek at some of what he covers:
Myth 1: You shouldn't throw water on the stove. Jasper explains, ""All stoves are designed to be waterproof, and the only reason the stones are there is to retain heat and to evaporate the water, or Löyly as we call it, from the rocks. This is an essential part of Finnish sauna culture. There is no such thing as a dry sauna. We always throw water on the sauna stove."
Myth 2: Sauna is all about strict time and temperature. While Finns typically enjoy temperatures above 70∘C (around 158∘F), Jasper stresses that enjoying the experience and relaxing are paramount. Sauna offers a rare digital-free sanctuary where you can unwind for as long as you wish. It's also a place for meaningful connection, with families often sharing this special time together—just remember to steer clear of politics and religion!
