In the heart of Bukhara, one of Central Asia’s most storied cities, bathing has always been a source of hygiene as well as tradition, therapy, and connection. The city’s hammams, or public bathhouses, have shaped daily life for over a millennium, standing as symbols of health and hospitality in the Islamic world.
Among them, Hammam Bazori Cord remains the oldest still in operation, dating back to the 1500s. Built partly underground to conserve heat and maintain its intricate water system, its domed chambers radiate warmth through stone and steam. Visitors move through a sequence of vaulted rooms, each offering a different temperature and rhythm, culminating in the kata goombaz, or great dome: a high-heat chamber where the famed “bone-breaking” massage technique is practiced.
This massage, passed down through seven generations of Iranian masters, blends pressure and precision in a ritual equal parts intense and restorative. The lineage of these masseurs continues unbroken, their craft preserved within family tradition and the living history of the hammam itself.
After bathing, guests ascend to an above-ground pavilion to rest and drink tea, a final act of slowing down in a culture that prizes patience and reflection. Here, conversation replaces the sound of steam, and the transition from heat to stillness becomes part of the experience.
Even in an age of modern plumbing and private comfort, the hammam remains central to Bukhara’s social fabric. It is a place where stories are exchanged, bodies are renewed, and ancient practices quietly endure beneath the domes and courtyards of this Silk Road city.
