Across Minnesota's North Shore and Iron Range, sauna carries the imprint of Finnish immigration that began more than a century ago. In Ely, the Ely Steam Sauna has run as a public, steam-operated bathhouse for over a hundred years, passed down through generations of the same community. Nearby, at Camp du Nord on Burntside Lake, a log sauna built in the 1930s by Finnish immigrants still draws bathers into the lake for a cold plunge between rounds of heat. The film also follows sauna's evolution into contemporary architecture, including an award-winning modern sauna and a floating sauna built onto a barge in the Duluth harbor, open to the public year round, closing on an old Finnish proverb: that all people are created equal, but nowhere more so than in a sauna.
